Are There Any Good Golf Courses Near Lisbon In Portugal?
Algarve gets all the attention when it comes to Portuguese golf- and for good reason. The weather is spectacular all year round and there are countless courses are resorts in the area for you to choose from. Maybe you've been going to Algarve for years and you want to stay in Portugal but you want a change of scenery.
Lisbon, as a golfing destination, is starting to grow and command attention. Apart from the golf facilities available, it has the added bonus of having the history and culture of the old city; one of the oldest cities in Europe and today a modern, thriving metropolis.
Golfing Options Near Lisbon
There are roughly 29 courses (both 9 and 18-hole) in the Lisboa area. In terms of golf course design, the influence of American style design is clear and due to the fact that most of the designers came from over from the states or learnt their trade on the other side of the pond. Here are some of the biggest names in the golf course design business and the mark they have left on golf in the Lisbon area:
- Rocky Roquemore: Designed the Belas and Quinta Do Peru
- Robert Trent Jones Snr: Designed Quinta da Marinha and Troia
- Robert Trent Jones Jr: Designed the Penha Longa (Atlantico)
The two main areas for course are Estoril, near the capital, and Obidos along the coast. For accommodation, you can stay at Quinta da Marinha or Penha Longa with the towns of Estoril & Cascais nearby and the capital not too far away. Of course, you can stay right in the heart of the capital city and travel to your ideal golfing destination every day.
The Penha Longa course has hosted the Portuguese Open in the past and the amazing Quinta da Marinha were designed by Robert Trent Jones and very polished. Riba Golfe and Campo Real are both woodlands/parkland layouts also. If you are in the mood for something different, Oitavos Dunes and Praia del Rey will remind you of playing on some of the great courses on the British coastline.
